Dates in Religions
1. In the Holy Quran and the Story of Mary
When Mary, peace be upon her, was in labor, God Almighty said to her:
"And shake toward yourself the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates. So eat and drink and be content."
This verse demonstrates the great nutritional value of dates, their ability to support a woman's health during the most difficult times, and their significance as a blessed food.
2. The Prophetic Tradition and Sayings of the Prophet ﷺ
The Importance of Dates as a Staple Food
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"O Aisha! A house without dates is a house whose inhabitants are hungry."
This is evidence that dates are a filling and energy-rich food.
The Virtues of Ajwa Dates
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates from Medina every morning will not be harmed by poison or magic."
Dates at Iftar (Breaking the Fast)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates, for they are a blessing. If he does not find dates, then let him break it with water, for it is pure." Dates for Suhoor
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"The best Suhoor for the believer is dates."
Giving Dates in Charity
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"Protect yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date."
Historically
Dates are among the oldest cultivated fruits in the Middle East. They were an ideal food for desert life and travel due to their high nutritional value and ease of transport and storage. Dates symbolize blessing and generosity, and are associated with hospitality and giving. They represent an essential part of Arab heritage, religion, and culture.
In Ancient Civilizations
The Tree of Life: In the civilizations of Mesopotamia, the date palm was a symbol of life, fertility, and growth, and dates were a staple food.
The Chinese and Dates: An ancient story tells of a Chinese prisoner who survived for three years by eating only dates, prompting the Chinese to study their complete nutritional value.
Commercial and Heritage Tales: It is said that a poor Damascene merchant became wealthy after his disabled mother prayed for him. The dust in his hand turned into a golden necklace when he was trading dates, and he became the first to sell dates in Iraq and profit from them.
Patience and Perseverance: Dates are used as a metaphor for patience, as in the saying: "Be patient like the date palm; it is struck with stones and yet yields ripe fruit" (a proverb about enduring hardship to obtain fruit).
